Development Stages

Hi everyone, Who of you guys actually know what the development stages of software is? I'm a alpha tester for a certain company and also help with beta testing in the field. The different stages of development go quite deep and become very complicated. So I was wondering who would like to know more about this? Also who would know about a really neat way of communicating over the net, say for instance you are a group working on a mod, being able to track everything that is going on can be quite hard.
